Long Beach State went just 4-9 to start the year, winning over Idaho, Wright State, Bethesda and Westcliff. The Beach got it going in mid-January with wins over UC Santa Barbara, CSU Northridge, UC San Diego and UC Irvine in succession.
Matched up against UC Riverside on Thursday, the Beach posted a 38-31 advantage by the break and were able to hang on for the 68-62 win. Aboubacar Traore pulled down a whopping 23 rebounds with 12 points, and Colin Slater scored 16 points as well.
Over on the UC Davis side, they hit a 6-3 run to begin the season. The Aggies lost to Sac State, Academy of Art U and Portland in that time. After that came a 2-2 run with wins over UC San Diego and CSU Northridge.
UC Davis played CSU Fullerton on Thursday. The Aggies kept the pace in the first half, but fell behind on a 44-28 run from there in an eventual 74-58 loss. Elijah Pepper put up 15 points with four rebounds and three assists, and Caleb Fuller chipped in 13 points.
The Aggies are 13-5-2 ATS in their last 20 Saturday games and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 after an ATS loss. The over is 3-1-1 in UC Davis’ last five Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Beach are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and 5-0 ATS in the last five overall. LBSU is 4-0 ATS in their last four after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Long Beach State here. The Beach are rolling along quite well in this five-game win streak; they’ve hit 68 or more points in each of the last four. LBSU has also held opponents to less than 70 points in each of their last five. As for UC Davis, they’ve been a bit choppy scoring-wise lately with 64 or fewer points in three of their last five. I think the Aggies will stick the pace for the first half or so before the Beach pulls away for a cover/win.
