The Long Beach State Beach and the UCLA Bruins meet Friday in college basketball action from Pauley Pavilion. Long Beach State is 1-0 following a win over California Baptist this week. Long Beach State managed to go 20-13 overall last year with a 12-3 run in Big West Conference games. The Beach managed a regular-season championship with that effort but lost to CSU Fullerton in the conference tourney before a First-Round NIT loss to BYU.
In their first action of the 2022-23 season on Monday versus Cal Baptist, Long Beach State scored 38 points in the first half. The Beach kept it rolling in a 79-64 win. Lassina Traore doubled up on 13 points and 12 boards, and Jadon Jones added 13 points of his own.
Over on the UCLA side, they put up a 27-8 overall record last season. The Bruins made a 15-5 run in Pac-12 games for a second-place finish behind Arizona. UCLA made it to the Sweet Sixteen in the national tournament where they lost to North Carolina.
UCLA’s first game against Sacramento State was a success. The Bruins scored 39 points in the first half and 37 more after the break in a 76-50 win. Jaylen Clark put up 17 points with eight boards, and both Tyger Campbell and Jaime Jaquez added 14 points apiece.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Long Beach State. The Beach didn’t exactly open up against a tough opponent in Cal Baptist but they took care of business all the same. LBSU shot 50.8 percent from the field with 43 rebounds and 17 team assists in the 15-point victory. As for UCLA, they came up with a big win versus an overmatched Sacramento State team that shot only 34.5 percent from the field. The Bruins were out-rebounded 37-33 but did take pretty good care of the ball overall. UCLA will win this one, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Beach hang in there.
