The Saint Joseph’s Hawks and the UMass Minutemen meet Saturday in college basketball action from Mullins Center. St. Joseph’s is 10-12 on the year and coming off an overtime loss to Davidson. As for the Minutemen, they’re sitting at 10-12 as well. UMass lost to George Washington in their last game. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Saint Joseph’s started out the year at a decent 6-4 clip, but they’ve been unable to win consecutive games since then. The Hawks are 2-2 in their last four games with wins over Duquesne and Fordham alongside losses to St. Bonaventure and Davidson.
Matched up against Davidson on Wednesday, the Hawks had a 38-31 edge in the first half. St. Joseph’s was outscored 22-29 from there and eventually fell 73-67 in OT. Leading scorer Erik Reynolds put up 20 points with two assists to lead the team.
Over on the UMass side, they hit a 7-5 run out of the gate, then had to take a postponement break from December 19 to January 5. Since then the Minutemen are just 3-7. In UMass’ last appearance on Wednesday they fell to George Washington.
In the George Washington matchup, the Minutemen were outscored 38-43 in the first half and 30-34 from there on the way to a 77-68 loss. Trent Buttrick led the team on 17 points and 11 boards, while Rich Kelly chipped in 15 points.
The Minutemen are 1-4 ATS in their last five at home and 5-0 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. The over is 5-1 in UMass’ last six Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Hawks are 14-31-1 ATS in their last 46 after an ATS win and 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games. Saint Joseph’s is 4-1 ATS in their last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Saint Joseph’s here. The Hawks played pretty well in the first half during their last game against Davidson. Saint Joseph’s did what a lot of teams do against the Wildcats, though; they fell behind in the second half and ended up losing. Still, Saint Joseph’s has been fairly competitive over their last five games even though they’re just 2-3 in that time.
This matchup should be a pretty good one. The Minutemen have scored pretty well themselves lately so I like this game to be a fairly high-total affair. I like the Hawks to bang out the cover/win, though.
