Coppin State began the year with losses to Charlotte and Georgetown. The Eagles rebounded with wins over Mount St. Mary’s, Navy and Tennessee Tech in the next three games, then lost to Marshall and Towson.
Matched up against Maryland on Friday, the Eagles continued their losing streak. Coppin State was down 47-36 by halftime and didn’t get closer in a 95-79 loss. Sam Sessoms was tops in scoring with 28 points, six boards and six assists.
Over on the UMBC side, they went 2-2 over their first four games this year. The wins were over Penn State York and Lafayette; the losses came versus Tulane and Princeton. UMBC would then beat Central CT State before a loss to UNC Greensboro.
Back on Saturday versus Georgetown, the Retrievers had things tied up at 42-42 going into the second half. UMBC faded from there and took a 79-70 loss. Matteo Picarelli put up 19 points, and Colton Lawrence had 17 points with eight boards.
PICK: I might take a stab on Coppin State in this one. Probably not touching it, though. The Eagles were overwhelmed by a good Maryland team in their last game. That said, Coppin State shot quite well in the loss with 54.9 percent from the field and 9-of-19 (47.4 percent) from outside. The rebounding deficit (40-26 defensive; 18-6 offensive) and 16 turnovers didn’t help, though. The Eagles should match up much better versus UMBC. The Retrievers have scored 70 or more in four straight however, so this could end up being a shootout.
