North Carolina A&T got off to a sketchy 4-9 start this year with wins over Greensboro, St. Francis BK, Carver and East Tennessee State. The Aggies hit a win streak versus Mid-Atlantic Christian, Presbyterian, Radford and Hampton before the High Point loss.
On Saturday versus High Point, NC A&T trailed 42-33 at the break and couldn’t catch up in a 78-71 defeat. Leading scorer Marcus Watson posted 17 points with five rebounds and two assists. David Beatty added 14 points as well.
Over on the UNC Asheville side, they managed a 10-5 run over their first 15 games. The losses came to Chattanooga (twice), North Carolina and UT-Martin. Since then it’s been a pair of losses to Winthrop and South Carolina Upstate.
In the USC Upstate game, the Bulldogs trailed 35-33 at halftime and eventually lost 76-73 in a tight game. UNC Asheville’s leading scorer was Drew Pember on 27 points, eight rebounds and three assists 33 minutes.
The Bulldogs are 6-1 ATS in their last seven at home and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 overall. UNC Asheville is 6-1 ATS in their last seven after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Aggies are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up loss and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. The over is 6-1 in NC A&T’s last seven road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs have had a couple of tough games in their last pair, but they’ve stayed competitive. One was an OT loss to Winthrop and the other a three-point loss to USC Upstate. Outside of that UNC Asheville has played well lately and scored 73 or more in five of their last six. As for NC A&T, they’ve scored fairly well lately themselves and should be able to hang around most of the way here. Should be an interesting matchup but I think the Bulldogs have the cover.Â
