The San Francisco Dons and the UNLV Rebels meet Saturday in college basketball action from Thomas & Mack Center. San Francisco is 8-3 overall this year. San Francisco took wins in their first six outings to kick off the year, then lost to Davidson on November 25. Since then it’s been a 2-2 run with victories over Little Rock and Merrimack alongside losses to Utah State and New Mexico.
In the New Mexico game, the Dons were up 38-31 by the break but faltered from there with just 26 more points in a 67-64 loss. Khalil Shabazz topped the team with his 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Over on the UNLV side, it’s been smooth sailing in the win column so far. The victories have come versus Southern U, Incarnate Word, Dayton, High Point, Southern IL, Minnesota, Life Pacific, San Diego, Hawaii and Washington State.
In last weekend’s matchup versus Washington State, the Rebels were up 33-30 by the break. UNLV kept the pace from there and emerged with a 74-70 win. Keshon Gilbert put up 25 points and Elijah Harkless added 20 points.
PICK: I might take a stab on San Francisco here. The Dons are just 2-3 in their last five games, but they’ve lost those three matchups to teams that only had one loss between them (Davidson, Utah State and New Mexico). San Francisco is going to have to get it going on the scoreboard, though; they’ve been below 70 points in three straight games. As for UNLV, they’re coming off their closest game of the year so far but otherwise there’s really not much to complain about. UNLV should still win this one, but San Francisco can keep the pace if they play well.
