Charleston Southern Buccaneers
Charleston Southern kicked off the year on a shaky run, going 7-9 over their first 16 outings. The Buccaneers are just 1-6 since then, losing to Radford, UNC Asheville, Campbell, Winthrop, Gardner-Webb and High Point in that time.
Matched up against High Point on Saturday, the Buccaneers were up 40-39 in the locker room. Charleston Southern hit a 33-42 deficit in the second half and lost 81-73. Tops in scoring was Tahlik Chavez with 31 points in 33 minutes.
USC Upstate Spartans
Over on the USC Upstate side, they began their season on a .500 run at 8-8 through 16 games. The Spartans are 2-5 in their last seven, with losses to Longwood, UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, Radford and Campbell.
On Saturday versus UNC Asheville, the Spartans were up 29-27 going into the break. USC Upstate posted 47 more points from there and took the win 76-70. Jordan Gainey was the high man with 19 points and three rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m going to stick with USC Upstate. Probably not touching this one, though; neither team has played all that well lately. That said, it should be a competitive game. USC Upstate managed 76 points in their last game, which was their highest total since way back on January 7. The Buccaneers have scored 73 or more in three of the last five, so it’s probably going to take a quality offensive effort to get over the proverbial hump here. If the Spartans get off to a good start and play to their capabilities I think they’ve got a good shot at a cover in this one.
