The Winthrop Eagles will travel to the G.B. Hodge Center to take on the South Carolina Upstate Spartans this Wednesday night in College Basketball action.

The Winthrop Eagles had their 6-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 12-7 on the season after being defeated by the High Point Panthers, 65-56, this past Monday night. Winthrop led by a 29-26 margin at halftime, however, the Eagles had no answers on the offensive end in the 2nd half and could not fight back after High Point took a 53-37 lead with 11:20 left in regulation. Winthrop shot 41.7% from the field & 16.7% from beyond the arc while allowing High Point to shoot 40.0% from the field & 41.7% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Eagles was Kelton Talford who had a double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, & 2 steals.

Offensively, Winthrop is averaging 74.7 ppg on 47.9% shooting from the field. The Eagles are averaging 8.5 three-pointers per game on 36.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Winthrop has been led by D.J. Burns Jr. (15.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 1.2 apg), Patrick Good (12.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.1 spg), Cory Hightower (10.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.1 spg), & Micheal Anumba (7.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.3 apg).

Defensively, Winthrop is allowing their opponents to an average of 71.2 ppg on 43.2% shooting from the field. The Eagles have a rebound margin of 2.2 and a turnover margin of -0.8.

The South Carolina Upstate Spartans won their 5th straight game and improved to 8-10 on the season after defeating the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 70-57, this past Saturday. South Carolina Upstate dominated Charleston Southern from the start in this one and had no trouble securing the victory after going into halftime with a 37-21 lead. South Carolina Upstate shot 47.4% from the field & 43.8% from beyond the arc while holding Charleston Southern to just 32.7% shooting from the field & 16.0% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Spartans was Jordan Gainey who had 17 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks, & 2 steals.

On the season, South Carolina Upstate is averaging 69.9 ppg on 45.0% shooting from the field. The Spartans have a rebound margin of -2.8 and a turnover margin of -0.5. Offensively, South Carolina Upstate has been led by Bryson Mozone (14.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.7 apg), Jordan Gainey (12.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.9 apg), Dalvin White (7.4 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 3.6 rpg), & Mysta Goodloe (6.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.0 apg).

Defensively, South Carolina Upstate is allowing their opponents to average 70.6 ppg on 42.4% shooting from the field. The Spartans have a rebound margin of -2.8 and a turnover margin of -0.5.

The Eagles are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 road games & 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Spartans are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall & 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win.

Winthrop has been led by their offense which ranks t-109th in scoring offense, 26th in FG%, & 71st in 3P-FG%, however, the Eagles have struggled defensively as they come into this game ranked just 238th in scoring defense & 205th in defensive FG%. South Carolina Upstate has been below average on both ends of the court this season and come into this game ranked just 220th in scoring offense, 223rd in scoring defense, & 157th in defensive FG%.

Winthrop is the better team, however, the Eagles are just 3-6 on the road this season and it was concerning to see Winthrop struggle so much from beyond the arc against High Point. South Carolina Update has been on a role as of late, which includes an impressive win on the road against UNC Asheville and as I think their three-point shooting has plenty of success at home against a below average Winthrop defense, I’m taking the Spartans and the points. Good Luck!
