CSU Fullerton posted a 3-1 run over their first four games, beating Pepperdine, Vermont and Pacific. The Titans hit a 1-3 stretch after that however, beating Westcliff and falling to Utah Tech, North Dakota and Seattle.
In the Seattle game last Wednesday, the Titans took a 35-28 edge into the break. CSUF went on a 41-27 deficit from there in a 69-62 loss. Leading the team was Max Jones with 16 points, and Latrell Wrightsell had 15 points.
Over on the USC side, they were 4-1 after five games. The wins in that time came versus Alabama State, Vermont, Mount St. Mary’s and BYU. After losses to Tennessee and Wisconsin, USC beat California and Oregon State.
Matched up against Oregon State on Sunday, USC was in trouble with a 34-23 halftime deficit. The Trojans stormed back in the second with 40 points and took the tense 63-62 win. Kobe Johnson was tops in scoring with 17 points and six rebounds.
PICK: I’ll probably stick with USC. Not going near it, though. The Trojans had a rough time disposing of a mediocre Oregon State team in their last outing. USC shot a solid 46 percent from the field but made just 13-of-21 (61.9 percent) from the line and got out-rebounded 34-23. Still, the Trojans have been pretty competitive this year even if they’re not exactly blowing up the scoreboard. As for CSU Fullerton, they’ve had some scoring duds lately as well: 62 or fewer points in there straight games (all losses). I don’t think the Titans will eclipse that here, either.
