The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles and the USC Trojans meet Monday in college basketball action from Galen Center. Florida Gulf Coast managed to go 22-11 overall last year and finished third in the ASUN East Division. As for USC, they’re coming off a 26-8 campaign and a third-place finish in the Pac-12 standings. Florida Gulf Coast managed to take a step forward last season, ultimately finishing 22-11 overall and 10-6 in ASUN Conference games. That result put the Eagles in third place in the conference’s East Division, just behind Liberty and Jacksonville.

Florida Gulf Coast came out of non-conference play at 10-4, then lost five of their first eight matchups in conference play. The Eagles eventually leveled out but fell to Bellarmine in the ASUN Tournament. FGCU made the Basketball Classic, where they lost to Coastal Carolina in the second round.

Over on the USC side, they also took a step forward over 2020-21 (25 wins) last year with a 26-8 overall record and a 14-6 finish in the Pac-12. The Trojans landed in third place with that effort, behind Arizona (18-2) and UCLA (15-5).

USC stayed pretty consistent all of 2021-22, and didn’t fall in consecutive games until the final pair of matchups (Arizona and UCLA). The Trojans fell to UCLA in the Pac-12 Tournament, then suffered a disappointing First Round loss to Miami-FL in the national tourney.

The Eagles are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 road games and the over is 6-0 in their last six overall. USC is 4-0 ATS in their last four Monday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall.

PICK: I’m going to stick with USC. The Trojans are still dealing with the tough First Round loss in the NCAA Tournament last year, as well as the departure of Isaiah Mobley for the NBA. That leaves a big hole for Drew Peterson and Boogie Ellis to fill, and they’ll be aided by the No. 7-ranked recruiting class this year. The Trojans didn’t get much of anything in the transfer portal, but they’ve got plenty of talent on the team already. I think they’ll be fine in the opener.
