The Sacramento State Hornets and the Utah Utes meet Saturday in college basketball action from Jon M. Huntsman Center. Sacramento State has a win in the books already, taking out William Jessup by 40 points this week. As for Utah, they managed a 14-point win over Abilene Christian in their opener. Sacramento State had a disappointing year in 2020-21, going just 8-12 overall and 5-9 in the Big Sky matchups. The Hornets would finish just two spots out of the basement in the conference standings, and lost to Northern Colorado in the Big Sky Tournament.
The Hornets didn’t have any issues with William Jessup in their opener this week. Sacramento State scored 48 points in the first half on the way to an 89-59 blowout win. Bryce Fowler was the top scorer with his 17 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Over on the Utah side, they’re coming off a 12-13 overall run last year with an 8-11 showing in the Pac-12. The Utes managed a win over Washington in the Pac-12 Tournament but ultimately fell to USC in the Quarterfinals in double-overtime 91-85.
Utah held a 34-27 edge on Abilene Christian in their opener game this week and eventually prevailed 70-56. David Jenkins was the leading player with his 15 points and six boards, while Branden Carlson added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Utah is 0-4 ATS in their last four after an ATS win and 1-4 ATS in the last five after a straight-up win. The Utes are 4-1 ATS in their last five Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Hornets are 6-1 ATS in their last seven as a favorite and the over is 4-1 in their last five overall. The over is 4-1 in the Hornets’ last five Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going to try Utah. The Utes posted a big win during their opener, but didn’t shoot all that well. Utah posted a 38.7 percent rate from the field, but made up for it with 55 team rebounds and 12 assists. The Utes did play something of a sloppy game with 20 turnovers and 22 fouls, however.
As for Sac State, they put up a 47.8 percent mark from the field in their opener, but we’ll have to see how they look against better competition. I think the Hornets can give Utah a game before the Utes eventually grind out a cover.
