Louisiana Tech managed an 8-2 run over their first 10 games this year, losing to only Alabama and NC State along the way. After another loss to LSU, the Bulldogs took out Crowley’s Ridge, Marshall and Western Kentucky in succession.
Matched up against Western Kentucky on January 1, the Bulldogs had a 31-21 deficit at the break. LA Tech went on a 53-42 run from there in a comeback win 74-73. Top scorer Kenneth Lofton put up 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Over on the UTEP side, they opened the year at 7-4. The losses during that time were to New Mexico State (twice), UC Riverside and Kansas. In the last two games the Miners have lost both, falling to Bradley and UAB.
In the UAB matchup back on December 30, the Miners were outscored 42-28 in the first half and limped to a 75-62 loss. Souley Boum led the way on 20 points with seven boards, and Jorrell Saterfield chipped in 15 points in 30 minutes of work.
The Miners are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven Thursday games and 0-4 ATS in the last five overall. UTEP is 0-4 ATS in their last five at home.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last five Thursday games. LA Tech is 25-10-1 ATS in their last 36 overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs get credit for a nice comeback win in their last outing despite shooting a tepid 38.7 percent from the field. LA Tech has scored well over their last three outings with 74 points or more in each, and they’ve generally stood tall against comparable teams this season.
As for UTEP, they had a nice three-game run in December but they’ve since fallen flat in their last pair. The Miners are really going to need to turn it on if they want to keep pace in this one.
