The Old Dominion Monarchs and the UTEP Miners meet Wednesday in Conference USA college basketball action from Ford Center. Old Dominion is 13-18 on the year so far. The Monarchs beat Middle Tennessee in their last outing. As for UTEP, they’re 18-12 and coming off a win over North Texas. Old Dominion hasn’t quite been able to sustain any winning streaks this year. They’ve also got some rough runs, like a 2-7 stretch in January/February. The Monarchs are 3-1 in their last four however, with wins over FAU, FIU and Middle Tennessee.
Matched up agains Middle Tennessee on Saturday, the Monarchs held a slim three-point lead by halftime. Old Dominion hit a 33-32 second-half run in a 68-64 win. CJ Keyser was the leading team scorer with 16 points and three rebounds.
Over on the UTEP side, they’ve been a little more consistent this year despite starting out at just 8-8 overall. The Miners are 2-2 in their last four games, falling to Middle Tennessee and UAB before wins over Rice and North Texas.
In the North Texas game on Saturday, the Miners jumped out to a 14-point halftime lead. UTEP was outscored 35-47 in the second but were able to hang on for the 70-68 win. Souley Boum was the leading scorer on 22 points with five rebounds.
The Miners are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 Wednesday games and 4-9 ATS in the last 13 after an ATS win. UTEP is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 overall.
Meanwhile, the Monarchs are 2-5 ATS in their last seven Wednesday games and 4-17 ATS in their last 21 neutral-site games. The over is 5-1 in Old Dominion’s last six Wednesday games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with UTEP here. The Miners played a little sketchy against Middle Tennessee and UAB, but otherwise they’re doing fairly well during this 4-2 stretch. These teams have only seen each other once this year—a 78-70 overtime road win for UTEP back on January 15. The Monarchs have scored 68 or more points in three of their last four, so I think they’ll hang around for most of the game here. I still like the Miners to pull out the cover, though. Should be a good one.
