The Texas A&M-CC Islanders and the UTRGV Vaqueros meet Friday in college basketball action from UTRGV Fieldhouse. Texas A&M-CC beat Omaha in their last game, which moved the Islanders to 4-5 overall. Texas A&M-CC Islanders 

The Islanders managed to win just three of their first eight games this year, taking out Southwestern Adventist, Dallas Christian and UTEP. Otherwise, Texas A&M-CC fell to Houston, Texas Tech, Northern Kentucky, Long Island U and UTRGV in that time. In the matchup versus the Vaqueros, the Islanders shot a tepid 37.1 percent from the field. 

Texas A&M-CC was able to get back into the win column versus Omaha in their last outing. The Islanders took a 33-26 lead into the second half and hung on for the 62-58 win. Leading team scorer Dayne Prim posted 19 bench points with seven rebounds and two assists.

UTRGV Vaqueros 

Over on the Vaqueros’ side, they went 2-7 over their first nine outings. The only wins in that time were versus Southwest Adventist and North American. UTRGV would lose to South Dakota, TCU, Oklahoma, Hawaii, Arkansas State, Grand Canyon and Tarleton State. 

In their win over Texas A&M-CC back on December 6, the Vaqueros were up by one point by the break. UTRGV kept it rolling in the second half and powered out the 76-74 result. Ahren Freeman put up 23 points with seven boards and three assists, while JJ Howard managed 16 points. 

ANDREW’S FREE TEXAS A&M-CC VS UTRGV PREDICTION 

I’ll stick with Texas A&M-CC. There’s not much to get excited about in this matchup, but we’ve at least got a recent meeting to draw from. The Islanders didn’t shoot well (37.1 percent) in the loss overall and hit just four of their 20 attempts from 3-point range (20 percent). That said, Texas A&M-CC had control of the boards 46-26 (16-1 offensive) and should be able to handle this one if the shooting comes around. The Islanders have hit 69 or more points in three straight games, so another 70-plus scoring outing should do it.
