The Southern Miss Golden Eagles and the UTSA Roadrunners meet Tuesday in Conference USA Tournament college basketball action from Ford Center. Southern Miss is 6-25 overall this year. The Eagles lost to Charlotte in their last game. As for UTSA, they’re currently 10-21 and coming off a win over Rice. Southern Miss had a 4-2 start to the year, but they’ve only been able to win two games since then. The Golden Eagles last beat Southeastern Baptist College back on January 19. They’ve been on a 14-game skid since, most recently falling to Charlotte.
On Saturday in the 49ers matchup, the Eagles were outscored 24-36 by halftime. Southern Miss got better on a 43-34 second half but couldn’t come back in a 70-67 loss. Isaih Moore led the team with his 20 points and 13 rebounds in the defeat.
Over on the Roadrunners’ side, they started the year out at 6-4 but they’ve only been able to cobble together four more wins since then. UTSA is 1-3 in their last four with losses to LA Tech, UAB and North Texas before a win over Rice.
Matched up against the Owls on Saturday, the Roadrunners were up 40-34 after the first half. UTSA kept it going on a 42-37 second-half run for an 82-71 win. Erik Czumbel topped the team with 22 points and five assists.
The Roadrunners are 2-7 ATS in their last nine neutral-site games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. The over is 12-4 in UTSA’s last 16 Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 3-10-1 ATS in their last 14 Tuesday games and the under is 5-1 in their last six Tuesday games. The over is 10-1 in Southern Miss’ last 11 overall.
PICK: I’m going to try UTSA here, but probably not going near it. There’s not a ton of intrigue in this one due to the teams’ records anyway. That said, the Roadrunners have scored 71 or more points in three of their last five games, including a 98-79 OT win over Southern Miss the last time these teams met up. (UTSA won the first meeting 74-73 as well.)
Southern Miss has hit 67 or more in three straight games themselves, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see another fairly high-scoring game here. Ultimately I think UTSA can pull off the cover, but it’s a coin flip. Should be an interesting matchup.
