The Texas State Bobcats and the UTSA Roadrunners meet Thursday in college basketball action from UTSA Convocation Center. Texas State is 2-1 on the year. The Bobcats beat Rhode Island in their last game. As for UTSA, they’re 2-1 as well following their win over St. Mary’s (TX) on Monday. Texas State opened up the 2022-23 season with a matchup versus Washington State. The Bobcats were outmatched in that one and fell 83-61. Texas State did get a win in game two versus Mid-America Christian 71-53, however.
In game three versus Rhode Island, the Bobcats were up 35-26 by halftime. Texas State had to scurry a bit in the second half but still came away with a 70-66 win. Mason Harrell led the team on 26 points with five rebounds, and Brandon Davis had 15 points.
Over on the UTSA side, they kicked off their year with a manageable matchup versus Trinity TX. The Roadrunners took that one easily 74-47. UTSA took on Texas A&M-CC in their second outing but lost 75-55 to fall to .500 on the year.
UTSA got it going again in their third matchup. This one was against St. Mary’s (TX), and the Roadrunners were down 33-32 by halftime. UTSA had a good second half and won 66-59, though. Both Jacob Germany and John Buggs scored 14 points apiece.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Texas State. The Bobcats have plenty to work on in the early-going this season, though. Texas State shot a nice 51.9 percent in their win over Rhode Island, but were out-rebounded 34-25 and shot a cold 20 percent (2-of-10) from 3-point range. Still, considering UTSA has struggled in their last couple of games (17 turnovers against St. Mary’s TX) I think the Bobcats have the upper hand on a cover here.
