The Alabama State Hornets and Vanderbilt Commodores meet Wednesday in college basketball action at the Memorial Gymnasium. The Alabama State Hornets won four games last year and enter year two under coach Mo Williams. The Vanderbilt Commodores won nine games last year and enter the third season under coach Jerry Stackhouse.

The Alabama State Hornets say goodbye to their best player in Brandon Battle, but they do still have one of the better players in the SWAC. Alabama State is a fairly young team overall, with only two seniors on its roster, but there’s potential here with a coach who is just starting to get his feet wet. Kenny Strawbridge returns after averaging 10.5 points and 7.2 rebounds, while D.J. Heath averaged 9 points and 2.5 assists. Kevion Stewart averaged 20.4 minutes per game last season, and Jordan O’Neal averaged 4.8 rebounds.

The Vanderbilt Commodores return their best player from last year, a guy who was an All-SEC selection. Vanderbilt also landed a massive pickup with the transfer of Minnesota center Liam Robbins. Vanderbilt also snagged two 4-star recruits in Peyton Daniels and Shane Dezonie. Out of nowhere, Vanderbilt is looking like a team that should not be slept on in the SEC. Scotty Pippen Jr. returns after averaging 20.8 points and 2.9 rebounds, while Jordan Wright averaged 8.7 points and 2.1 assists. Trey Thomas averaged 18.2 minutes per game last season and Myles Stute averaged 2.3 rebounds.

The Hornets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Wednesday games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Commodores are 3-0-3 ATS in their last 6 home games and 9-1-4 ATS in their last 14 games overall. The over is 5-1 in Hornets last 6 road games. The under is 4-1 in Commodores last 5 overall.

The Alabama State Hornets should be able to build on last year’s four victories with enough returning production and another year with Williams as coach. However, the Vanderbilt Commodores have a chance to be very good in the SEC this season when you factor in their returning players and the recruiting class. Robbins will miss at least a chunk of the season due to a foot injury, but there’s a lot to be positive about with Vanderbilt. I’ll lay the chalk.
