The Manhattan Jaspers and the VCU Rams meet Monday in college basketball action from Siegel Center. Manhattan managed to go 15-15 overall last year, landing in the bottom half of the MAAC. As for VCU, they’re coming off a 22-10 overall run last year. The Rams would ultimately make it to the Second Round of the NIT. The good news about Manhattan’s 15-15 overall record last year is that they eclipsed the mark of a season before (7-13). The Jaspers went 8-12 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games however, leaving them ahead of only Rider, Canisius and Quinnipiac.

Manhattan started out pretty well at 8-3 overall, but the team would win consecutive games just once (3) for the rest of the year. After hitting a 1-3 run to close out the regular season, the Jaspers fell to Rider in the first round of the conference tourney.

Over on the Rams’ side, they also improved on their 19-7 run from 2020-21 at 22-10 last season. VCU managed to go 14-4 in Atlantic 10 matchups, leaving the team in third place behind Davidson and Dayton.

VCU was sitting at a spotty 10-6 back in mid-January. The Rams rallied for the rest of the season and would only drop two more games, however. After a tough 75-64 loss to Richmond in the A-10 Tournament, the Rams fell to Wake Forest in the Second Round of the NIT.

The Jaspers are 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall. VCU is 4-1-1 ATS in their last six at home and the over is 9-3-1 in their last 13 overall.

PICK: I’ll probably stay with VCU in this one. The Rams should be equipped well enough to contend for a conference title this season if all goes well. VCU is coming off a nice defensive season last year (ranked seventh nationally in adjusted efficiency metrics), and they’ll get Ace Baldwin back at the point. Jamir Watkins (returning from injury issues) should contribute quite a bit on the offensive end as well. If the team can stay healthy, VCU should be near the top in the conference mix at season’s end.
