Radford went 3-3 over their first six outings this year, losing to Marquette, Notre Dame and William & Mary. The Highlanders would then beat Elon, NC Central and George Washington over the next three games.
Back on Saturday versus VMI, Radford carved out a 43-39 edge by the break. The Highlanders were outpaced 38-31 from there and lost 77-74. Kenyon Giles led the team on 21 points, and DaQuan Smith added 15 points.
Over on the VCU side, they were 5-2 over their first seven games, taking wins over Manhattan, Morgan State, Pittsburgh, Kennesaw State and Vanderbilt. The Rams lost their next pair to Temple and Jacksonville, however.
VCU got back into the win column on Sunday versus Howard. The Rams posted a 41-31 edge by halftime, then cruised from there to a 70-60 win. Brandon Johns led the team on 16 points with seven rebounds.
PICK: I’m going to stick with VCU. You could probably make a good case either way here, though; it should be a competitive game. The Rams are coming off a pretty solid win over Howard, which was a nice bounce-back effort after a couple of sub-par losses. VCU has scored 70 or more points in three of their last four. As for Radford, they’ve been on a scoring tear themselves with 74 or more in three straight. I like this one to be another fairly high-scoring affair with VCU eking out a cover. Should be a fun one.
