Richmond managed an up-and-down 10-7 run through their first 17 games this year, but they’ve gotten into a groove since then. The Spiders are 4-1 in their last five games with wins over Duquesne, St. Bonaventure, George Mason and La Salle in that time.
In the La Salle game, the Spiders nursed a three-point lead by halftime. Richmond hit a 41-30 run from there to take the 77-63 victory. Leading team scorer Tyler Burton doubled up on 15 points and 10 rebounds in 36 minutes of work.
Over on the VCU side, they stumbled to a 3-4 start but they’ve only lost three games since November 26. The Rams are currently riding a four-game win streak, taking out Duquesne, Rhode Island, George Mason and Fordham in that stretch.
On Tuesday in the Fordham matchup, the Rams posted a 40-26 edge by the break. VCU was outscored 26-35 from there but hung on for the 66-61 win. KeShawn Curry led the team with his 21 points, two rebounds and two steals.
VCU is 14-6 ATS in their last 20 overall and 5-14-1 ATS in the last 20 Friday games. The over is 5-0 in the Rams’ last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Spiders are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games and 7-15-4 ATS in their last 26 Friday games. The under is 7-1 in Richmond’s last eight overall.
PICK: I’m going to take VCU here. You could probably make a good case either way, though; both teams are playing well lately. In any case, the Rams had a relatively close escape in their last game but they’d been notching bigger wins in the three games prior. VCU has scored well for the most part lately, and should be able to put up a good number here.
The last time these teams met up, VCU took a tight 64-62 road victory. This one’s going to be a closely-contested matchup as well, and I like the Rams to power out a cover as they keep their win streak going.
