The Drexel Dragons and the Villanova Wildcats meet in college basketball action from the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday afternoon. Can Drexel be the 3rd Big 5 team to upset Villanova? Or will the Wildcats get back on track? Let’s take a look at this game and give out a Drexel vs. Villanova prediction.
Drexel Team Preview
The Drexel Dragons come into this game looking to build on a 4-3 record after a 69-48 win over Lafayette last time out. Amari Williams leads the Dragons in scoring and rebounding with 13 PPG and 8.1 RPG as the lone double-digit scorer for the Dragons up to this point in the year while Justin Moore has 9.6 PPG with 3.4 RPG and a team-high 3.1 APG as well to lead the Dragons in the assist department. As a team, Drexel is averaging 65.1 PPG on 42.7% shooting from the field, 23.8% from three, and 69.5% from the foul line this season.
Villanova Team Preview
The Villanova Wildcats will be looking to rebound from their second loss of the year against a Big 5 rival, losing to Saint Joseph’s by a final score of 78-65. Justin Moore leads the Wildcats in scoring and assists with 15.8 PPG and 2.4 APG along with 3.9 RPG while Eric Dixon has 14 PPG and 7 RPG as the only other double-digit scorer for Villanova so far this season. Tyler Burton also has 9.4 PPG with a team-high 7.3 RPG and TJ Bamba has 9 PPG with 3.6 RPG as well on the year. As a team, Villanova is averaging 76.8 PPG on 43% shooting from the field, 33.3% from three, and 83.2% from the foul line this season. The Wildcats are 6-2 in the Big East, the same number of wins as Marquette, Butler, and Providence.
Drexel vs. Villanova Prediction
I’m on Villanova here. I just don’t think that Drexel has the key to breaking down and beating Villanova, and that’s the 3-point shot. Villanova defends exclusively in the paint and inside the arc, and Drexel’s making less than one out of every four three-point attempts this season. Saint Joseph’s did that to a tee, but it’s hard to think that Drexel will be able to replicate that. I think the Wildcats end up being too much for Drexel here so I’ll lay the points with Villanova in this one.
