The Virginia Cavaliers and the Virginia Tech Hokies meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg. Here’s a Virginia Tech vs Virginia prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Virginia Tech vs Virginia pick.

Virginia Cavaliers Betting Preview

Virginia opened the season with wins over Rider, North Carolina Central, Hampton, Marshall and Northwestern before taking a loss to Butler. The next six games were all wins though, as the Cavaliers took out Queens U, Texas, Dayton, Maryland Eastern Shore, Maryland and American. That would give Virginia a nice 11-1 overall run in their first 12 games this year.

In the December 22 matchup with American, the Cavaliers were up by 20 points by the end of the first half. Virginia cruised on a 50-26 run the rest of the way and took the victory in the end 95-51. Leading the team in scoring was Thijs De Ridder with 27 points and eight boards. Malik Thomas had 11 points and four boards while Sam Lewis had 11 points with three assists.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they opened up the year with a string of wins too, taking out Charleston Southern, Providence, St. Joseph’s, Charlotte, Bryant and Colorado State. The Hokies would lose to Saint Mary’s and VCU, but then recovered with wins over South Carolina, George Mason, Western Carolina, MD Eastern Shore and Elon. That gives the Hokies an 11-2 overall record this year.

In the Elon game on December 20, the Hokies were down 43-35 by the end of the first half. Virginia Tech fought to force overtime and eventually won it 82-81 in thrilling fashion. Leading the way was Amani Hansberry with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Christian Gurdak added 17 points with six boards and Ben Hammond had 15 points with three assists in the win.

Why the Virginia Tech Hokies will win

  • Virginia Tech has won each of its last eight games at Cassell Coliseum.
  • Virginia has lost seven of its last eight day games against Conference opponents.
  • Virginia Tech has won the first half in seven of its last eight games at Cassell Coliseum.

Why the Virginia Cavaliers will win

  • Virginia has won each of its last 13 December games as an AP-ranked team against a non-AP-ranked team.
  • Virginia Tech has lost each of its last six games against AP-ranked opponents.
  • Virginia has won the first half in each of its last six games.

Virginia Tech vs Virginia Prediction

I’ll stay with Virginia. The Cavaliers didn’t have much issue with a middling American team in their last outing, hitting 62.3 percent from the field with 45 rebounds, 25 team assists, 56 points in the paint and just nine turnovers. The only real spot to complain about was the 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) from the line. Virginia is looking good during this current six-game win streak; they’ve got 80 or more points in each of those outings.

As for Virginia Tech, they had to fight to fend off a pesky Elon team in their last game. The Hokies ended up shooting 48.3 percent from the field with 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from outside, 34 rebounds, 40 points in the paint and 12 turnovers. Virginia Tech has 82 or more points in four of the five games during their own current win streak—however a couple of those were buoyed by overtime finishes.
