The Western Carolina Catamounts and the Virginia Tech Hokies meet Thursday in college basketball action from Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg. Here’s a Virginia Tech vs Western Carolina prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Virginia Tech vs Western Carolina pick.

Western Carolina Catamounts Betting Preview

It’s been a choppy year so far for Western Carolina, and they’ve been unable to stay above the .500 mark overall. The Catamounts lost their first pair to Cincinnati and Duke, then beat Voorhees, Stetson and UNC Asheville in the next trio. WCU is just 1-3 since then however, beating Virginia-Lynchburg with losses otherwise to Lipscomb, High Point and USC Upstate. That gives Western Carolina a 4-5 overall record through the first nine games this year.

In the USC Upstate game on Saturday, the Catamounts entered the second half with a 40-38 deficit. Western Carolina was outscored 38-29 the rest of the way in a 78-67 loss in the end. Tops in scoring was Justin Johnson with 13 points and six rebounds. Cord Stansberry added 11 points with six boards, while Samuel Dada had 10 points with a team-high eight rebounds in the defeat for WCU.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they opened up the year on a six-game win streak over Charleston Southern, Providence, Saint Joseph’s, Charlotte, Bryant and Colorado State. After losses to Saint Mary’s and VCU, the Hokies have since taken wins in their last pair over South Carolina and George Mason. Over 10 games this year that gives the Hokies an 8-2 overall record so far.

Matched up against George Mason over the weekend, the Hokies put up a 43-30 edge by the break. Virginia Tech was outscored 32-30 the rest of the way, finishing up on a 73-62 victory. Jaden Schutt led the team in the win with 18 points, and Amani Hansberry had 15 points with seven boards and six assists. Tyler Johnson chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds for Virginia Tech during the winning effort as well.

Why the Virginia Tech Hokies will win

  • Virginia Tech has won each of its last 11 games against the Southern Conference.
  • Western Carolina has lost each of its last 11 road games against non-Conference opponents.
  • Western Carolina has lost the first half in each of its last 11 road games against non-Conference opponents.

Virginia Tech vs Western Carolina Prediction

I’ll lean toward Virginia Tech. The Hokies didn’t have a ton of issues with a good George Mason team in their last outing. VA Tech shot 47.4 percent from the field with just nine turnovers in that one, but did get outmuscled on the boards 32-25. The Hokies got eight steals off 16 Patriots turnovers though, which really helped their cause. Since scoring fewer than 69 points in a pair of losses to Saint Mary’s and VCU, Virginia Tech has a combined 159 points in a pair of victories over South Carolina and George Mason.

As for Western Carolina, they shot just 34.5 percent from the field and had a 37-32 rebounding deficit in their latest loss to USC Upstate. The 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) from outside didn’t help matters either. The Catamounts have lost three of the last four, with fewer than 68 points in two of the three defeats.
