The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers and the Wagner Seahawks meet Thursday in college basketball action from Spiro Sports Center. Mount St. Mary’s is 11-11 on the year. The Mountaineers lost to Bryant in their last game. As for Wagner, they’re sitting at 16-2 and coming off a win over LIU. Mount St. Mary’s went just 5-10 over their first 15 games this year but they’ve since gotten better. The Mountaineers put up a six-game win streak starting in mid-January and got back above .500 on the year, but lost to Bryant in their last outing.
Matched up against Bryant back on Saturday, the Mountaineers had a 36-31 lead at halftime. Mount St. Mary’s faded from there and ended up with a rough 62-61 loss. Leading scorer Mezie Offurum put up 16 points with four rebounds.
Over on the Wagner side, they lost two of their first five games to Seton Hall and Penn State. The Seahawks have been on a nice 13-game win streak since then. They’ve taken out St. Francis BK, Central CT State and LIU in their last trio.
In the LIU game on Saturday, the Seahawks posted 35 points in the first half and 44 more in the second on the way to a 79-64 win. Alex Morales led the team on 28 points and 14 rebounds. Raekwon Rogers doubled up as well on 14 points and 11 boards.
Wagner is 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14 at home and 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 Thursday games. Wagner is 21-9-1 ATS in their last 31 overall.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and 8-1 ATS in their last nine overall. Mount St. Mary’s is 6-2 ATS in their last eight Thursday games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Wagner here. These teams were originally scheduled to meet up on New Year’s Eve, but that matchup was called off. The Seahawks have continued their 13-game tear since then, and they’ve scored well lately. Wagner has 69 or more points in eight of the last nine outings.
As for Mount St. Mary’s, they’ve looked better on the court lately but the team isn’t putting up crazy offensive numbers. If Wagner gets off to a good start in this one I think the Seahawks will be fine.
