The William & Mary Tribe and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. William & Mary managed a 7-10 overall record last year, finishing far down the CAA standings. As for Wake Forest, they went a tepid 6-16 last season. That effort left the Deacons just one spot out of last place in the ACC. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
William & Mary had something of a forgettable 2020-21, with a 7-10 overall record and a 4-6 finish in Colonial Athletic Association play. That result left the Tribe just three spots out of the basement in the standings, ahead of only Elon, Towson and UNC Wilmington.
The Tribe had a rocky schedule last year, filled with plenty of postponements and shuffling. William & Mary would go 2-2 in their final four games, then beat UNC Wilmington in the First Round of the CAA Tournament. The Tribe fell to Northeastern 63-47 in the next game, however.
Over on the Deacons’ side, they’re coming off a forgettable season themselves. Wake Forest went just 6-16 overall last year, with a 3-15 mark in a tough ACC. The Deacons landed ahead of only Boston College in the standings.
Wake Forest started out a solid 3-0 on the year, but wouldn’t see consecutive victories again. After skidding into the postseason on an 0-7 run, the Deacons faced Notre Dame in the First Round of the ACC Tournament, losing 80-77 to end their campaign.
The Tribe are 5-2 ATS in their last seven Wednesday games and 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games. The Demon Deacons are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four home games.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Wake here. Sure, the Demon Deacons aren’t expected to make any significant jumps in the ACC standings this year, but the potential for improvement—however it comes—is certainly there. Wake Forest has a few key players who could emerge as big contributors. One of those is Carter Whitt, who averaged 4.7 points and 2.7 assists per game last season. Another is Indiana State transfer Jake LaRavia; he can jump in and give significant minutes right away. It could very well be another losing season for Wake, but I can see the team climbing closer to .500 in 2021-22.
