The Drexel Dragons and the West Virginia Mountaineers meet Saturday in college basketball action from WVU Coliseum. Drexel lost to Princeton in their last outing, which dropped the Dragons to 5-4 on the year. As for West Virginia, they’re 3-5 this year following a loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Drexel Dragons
The Dragons kicked off the season on a 3-2 clip, losing to La Salle and Temple with wins otherwise versus Winthrop, Fairfield and Queens U. Drexel would then lose to Old Dominion before wins over Lafayette and Villanova. In the 57-55 upset over the Wildcats, Drexel held the opposition to just 32.8 percent shooting from the field.
In their last matchup versus Princeton, Drexel was down 36-26 by halftime. The Dragons scored another 44 points in the second but couldn’t make the comeback in an 81-70 defeat. Leading scorer Justin Moore posted 19 points, and Kobe MaGee added 18 bench points with five boards.
West Virginia Mountaineers
Over on the West Virginia side, it’s been a choppy season so far to say the least. The Mountaineers have wins over only Missouri State, Jacksonville State and Bellarmine this year. Otherwise WVU took losses to Monmouth, SMU, Virginia and St. John’s over their first seven outings.
Another loss was in the cards for the Mountaineers in their last matchup versus Pittsburgh. West Virginia was down by just one point at halftime, then got outscored 44-28 in the second half for an 80-63 result. Quinn Slazinski led the team in the losing effort with 22 points and six rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE DREXEL VS WEST VIRGINIA PREDICTION
I’ll take a stab on Drexel here. The Dragons haven’t been the most consistent team this season however, so I’m probably staying away. Drexel logged a sketchy 35.9 percent shooting from the field in the Princeton game, with just 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from outside. The rebounding was still solid, though: a 41-27 advantage. Drexel has been below 70 points in seven of nine games this year, so they’ll want to keep the total low here.
As for WVU, they’ve been at 63 points or below in four of their last five outings. This is looking like a defensive battle on paper at least, and I like the Dragons to power out the low-scoring cover.
