The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers and West Virginia Mountaineers meet Monday in college basketball action at the WVU Coliseum. The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers are coming off a 14-win season. The West Virginia Mountaineers are coming off a 16-win season.

The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers have won double-digit games each of the last 3 years. Jalen Benjamin returns after averaging 13.3 points and 2.5 rebounds, while Malik Jefferson averaged 7.1 points and 6.6 rebounds. Josh Reaves played in 617 minutes last season, and Deandre Thomas averaged 2.4 rebounds. The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers return their best player in Benjamin and enough depth around him to where they should be, at least on the level they were a year ago. The core of this Mount St. Mary’s club are seniors, so this has a chance to be a fun season where surprises take place.

The West Virginia Mountaineers enter the 16th season under coach Bob Huggins. Kedrian Johnson returns after averaging 5.3 points and 2.2 rebounds, while Seth Wilson averaged 1.9 points and 0.4 assists. James Okonkwo played in 11 minutes last season, and Kobe Johnson averaged 0.7 rebounds. The West Virginia Mountaineers say goodbye to pretty much their entire roster from last year, and that includes their top-4 scorers. WVU brings in a lot of transfers in hopes of filling in gaps, and that includes Tre Mitchell, who was a two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection with UMass. Still, West Virginia is a completely new team from a year ago.

The under is 7-1 in Mountaineers last 8 road games and 12-3-1 in Mountaineers last 16 overall. The over is 5-0 in Mountaineers last 5 Monday games and 17-5 in Mountaineers last 22 overall.

The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers should be the more motivated side, and they have a group of seniors who won’t be intimated of this spot. The West Virginia Mountaineers are obviously the more talented team, but they’re a new team with a lot of guys trying to find their role. It may take WVU time to get rolling. I’ll take a stab with Mount St. Mary’s and the points.
