UNC Greensboro hit an 8-4 run to start the year, then had a postponement break from December 16 to January 5. Since then the Spartans are 5-6. After losses to Wofford and VMI, UNC Greensboro beat Furman on Saturday.
Over the weekend versus Furman, the Spartans had a 10-point lead going into halftime. UNC Greensboro had to hold on but eventually prevailed 58-56 for the victory. Leading scorer De’Monte Buckingham put up 12 points with four rebounds and a steal.
Over on the Western Carolina side, they managed a 6-4 start over their first 10 games this year but haven’t been able to win consecutive outings since. After their latest win over East Tennessee State, the Catamounts fell to VMI on Friday.
In the VMI game, the Catamounts posted a 41-36 edge by halftime. Western Carolina was outscored 28-40 from there in a 76-69 loss. Nicholas Robinson tripled up in the defeat with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Catamounts are 6-2-1 ATS in the last nine at home and 1-4 ATS in the last five Monday games. Western Carolina is 4-1 ATS in their last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Spartans are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win and 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall. UNCG is 5-2 ATS in their last seven Monday games.
PICK: I’m going to go with UNC Greensboro. Probably not messing with this one, though; a lot of different things could happen here. In any case, the Spartans have been pretty tepid on the scoreboard over the last three games: they’ve hit 66 or fewer points in each. There should be some good scoring opportunities here, though; Western Carolina has given up 68 or more points in each of the last seven outings. If UNC Greensboro can get into an early scoring rhythm I think they’ll be fine, but realistically I’m not messing with it.
