Northern Illinois posted a 5-8 run through their first 13 games this year. The wins in that time were over Washington, Eastern Illinois, Chicago State, Kent State and Eastern Michigan. Since then it’s been a string of five losses culminating in a Saturday defeat by Central Michigan.
Matched up against Central Michigan over the weekend, the Huskies scored 28 points in the first half and 35 more from there in a 69-63 defeat. Keshawn Williams was the lead scorer on 20 points, and Anthony Crump added 10 points and six boards.
Over on the Western Michigan side, they managed a 4-6 run in their first 10 outings. The Broncos have since hit a 10-game losing streak. Western Michigan has lost to Bowling Green, Kent State and Ball State over their last trio.
In the Ball State game Saturday, the Broncos fell behind 46-39 at the break. Western Michigan didn’t get any closer in an eventual 83-72 loss. Lamar Norman led the way on 22 points, and B. Artis White added 21 points with three assists.
The Broncos are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six Tuesday games and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 at home. The under is 5-2 in Western Michigan’s last seven at home.
Meanwhile, the Huskies are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. The over is 3-1-2 in NIU’s last six overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Western Michigan. Sure, there’s not much to like about this 10-game losing streak. The Broncos have been choppy when it comes to scoring during that time, but they’ve gotten reasonably close in a handful of games. Considering Northern Illinois has been at 67 points or fewer in each of their last three (and nursing a five-game losing streak themselves), I think the Broncos can power out a cover here. Should be a competitive game if nothing else.
