The Hampton Pirates and the William & Mary Tribe meet Thursday in college basketball action from Kaplan Arena. Here’s a William & Mary vs Hampton prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best William & Mary vs Hampton pick.

Hampton Pirates Betting Preview

It’s been quite the middling season for Hampton so far, as the team has struggled to keep their heads above the .500 mark. That said, the Pirates do have a couple of good runs in the books this year. Hampton opened on a rough 3-5 stretch with wins over Mid-Atlantic Christian, UMBC, and Duquesne alongside losses versus George Washington, Providence, Norfolk State, Boise State, and High Point. A nice five-game win streak came after that featuring victories over North Carolina A&T, Apprentice School, Regent, Loyola Maryland, and Howard. Since then, however, it’s been a 2-4 run over the last half-dozen outings. The two wins in that time came courtesy of Delaware and North Carolina A&T. Otherwise it was losses to Charleston, Elon, Campbell, and William & Mary for a 10-9 overall record so far this season.

In the North Carolina A&T road rematch on Monday, the Pirates came out of halftime with a 39-29 edge. Hampton nearly gave it away in the second but persevered on a 44-35 stretch for a 74-73 win in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Noah Farrakhan, who came off the bench for 17 points, six assists, three steals, and two rebounds. George Beale added 13 points with two boards and two assists in 29 minutes of work to lead the starters as well.

William & Mary Tribe Betting Preview

Over on the William & Mary side, they kicked off the year on a rough run themselves. The Tribe have been able to right the ship since early December though, and they’re playing quite well these days record-wise. William & Mary went just 3-6 over their first nine outings with wins over only Dickinson PA, Norfolk State, and Georgia Southern. The losses otherwise were versus Radford, Winthrop, NC Central, NC State, App State, and Old Dominion. The Tribe have been on an 8-2 stretch over their last 10 outings. The losses came versus VCU and UNC Wilmington at that time. The wins were over Virginia-Lynchburg, Richmond, Navy, Hofstra, Stony Brook, Elon, North Carolina A&T, and Hampton, resulting in an 11-8 overall run through 19 games.

Matched up against UNC Wilmington on Monday, the Tribe exited the break with a 43-37 deficit. William & Mary fell further behind from there on a 42-37 run and took the loss 85-74. Leading the team in scoring during the losing effort was Gabe Dorsey with 18 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Kyle Pulliam came off the bench to provide 12 points, four assists, and one rebound in 18 minutes of work on the floor.

Why the William & Mary Tribe will win

  • William & Mary has won each of its last eight games at Kaplan Arena.
  • Hampton has lost nine of its last 10 Thursday road games.
  • William & Mary has won the first half in each of its last four day games at Kaplan Arena.

Why the Hampton Pirates will win

  • Hampton has won four of its last five day games.
  • William & Mary has lost 24 of its last 32 day games against the Coastal Athletic Association.
  • Hampton has won the first half in four of its last five games against the Coastal Athletic Association.

William & Mary vs Hampton Prediction

I’ll stick with William & Mary. The Tribe need a good bounce-back effort here following a rough outing on the road versus a solid UNC Wilmington team, though. William & Mary ended up with a tepid 40 percent shooting, 13 turnovers, and a 41-31 rebounding deficit in that one, so they didn’t do anything especially well. The good news is that the Tribe are scoring well these days; they’ve hit 70 or more points in 11 of the last 12 outings.

These teams last saw each other on January 16 in a 67-64 road win for the Tribe. William & Mary shot quite well in that one (51.2 percent), however, they also had turnover trouble (16) and posted a 32-29 deficit on the glass (13-5 offensive). If William & Mary are lacking in rebounding again this time—or if they start going cold shooting-wise—they’ll be in trouble. That said, I think the Tribe can power one out at home in the rematch here.
