The Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs and the Winthrop Eagles meet Saturday in Big South Tournament action from Bojangles’ Coliseum. Gardner-Webb is 18-12 overall this season. The Bulldogs eked out a tournament win over Campbell on Friday. As for Winthrop, they’re sitting at 22-8 on the year and coming off a tournament win over High Point. Gardner-Webb was below .500 as recently as January 22, but they’ve been on a roll since then. The Bulldogs are on a 9-2 run right now, taking out Presbyterian, UNC Asheville and Campbell within the last four games.
In the Friday tournament matchup versus Campbell, the Bulldogs were up by just one point at the break. Following a tense 31-31 second half, Gardner-Webb pulled off the 54-53 win. Leading the way was Lance Terry on 14 points and five rebounds.
Over on the Winthrop side, they got off to a rocky 6-6 start through a dozen games this year. The Eagles have only lost two games since December 21, however. Winthrop is sitting on a nine-game win streak right now, most recently over High Point.
Matched up against High Point in the tournament game Friday, the Eagles got off to a 32-17 start by halftime. Winthrop posted a 36-34 advantage the rest of the way in a 68-51 win. Tops in scoring was Cory Hightower with 21 points and six rebounds.
Winthrop is 3-9 ATS in their last 12 Saturday games and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 1-4 ATS in their last five overall and 5-2 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Winthrop here. The Eagles played a good game on Friday, shooting 50 percent from the field with 37 rebounds and 14 team assists. Winthrop had hit 81 or more points in four straight games before that relatively low total, though.
As for Gardner-Webb, they were close in a 64-62 defeat the first time these teams met up this season, but lost 81-70 in the rematch on February 16. I like the Bulldogs to keep the pace for most of the game here, but I think Winthrop will pull out the cover.
