The Radford Highlanders and the Winthrop Eagles meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Winthrop Coliseum. Radford is 7-15 this year and coming off a loss to Presbyterian. Radford managed a 4-4 record out of the gate this year but they haven’t been able to win consecutive games since then. The Highlanders are 1-4 in their last five with losses to UNC Asheville, High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian.
In the Presbyterian game on Saturday, the Highlanders posted a 37-34 edge by halftime but were outscored 33-44 from there in a 78-70 loss. Tops in scoring was Josiah Jeffers with 18 points and four rebounds. Bryan Hart added 14 points.
Over on the Winthrop side, they managed a 6-6 run in their first dozen games this year, then hit a six-game win streak in January. It’s been a 3-2 stretch for the Eagles in their last five, with wins over USC Upstate, NC A&T and Hampton.
Matched up against Hampton, the Eagles were down by one point at the break. Winthrop hit a 39-26 run from there in a 69-57 win. Leading scorer DJ Burns put up 23 points with seven boards, and Kelton Talford added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Eagles are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 overall and 0-5 ATS in their last five Wednesday games. The under is 6-2 in Winthrop’s last eight overall.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders are 1-6 ATS in their last seven road games and 6-20 ATS in their last 26 overall. Radford is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 Wednesday games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Winthrop. The Eagles have looked pretty solid over their last 11 games, even though they’re not necessarily tearing it up on the scoreboard. Winthrop has been solid on defense; they’ve allowed 65 or fewer points in six of their last eight outings. As for Radford, they’ve scored 58 or fewer in four of their last seven games and probably won’t put up a ton of points here either. Should be Winthrop’s cover to take.
