Winthrop vs USC Upstate 2/24/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The South Carolina Upstate Spartans and the Winthrop Eagles meet in college basketball action from the Winthrop Coliseum on Thursday night.

The South Carolina Upstate Spartans will look to build on back-to-back wins after a 78-73 win over Charleston Southern in OT last time out. Bryson Mozone leads the Spartans in scoring with 15.2 PPG along with 5.5 RPG while Jordan Gainey has 13.4 PPG and 3.9 RPG as the only other double-digit scorer for USC Upstate up to this point in the year. Dalvin White has 9.2 PPG and a team-high 3.9 APG this season. As a team, USC Upstate is averaging 71.3 PPG on 45.3% shooting from the field, 37.8% from three and 74.6% from the foul line while allowing 72.5 PPG on 43.5% shooting from the field and 30.2% from three this season.

The Winthrop Eagles will try to build on a six-game win streak after an 84-79 win over UNC-Asheville last time out. D.J. Burns leads the Eagles in scoring with 15.4 PPG along with 4.4 RPG while Patrick Good has 11.4 PPG and Cory Hightower has 11.1 PPG with a team-high 5.6 RPG to lead the Eagles on the glass so far this season and to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Winthrop so far this season. Drew Buggs is also contributing a team-high 4.3 APG as well this season. As a team, Winthrop is averaging 75 PPG on 48.4% shooting from the field, 36.6% from three and 68.7% from the foul line while allowing 70.5 PPG on 43.1% shooting from the field and 34.4% from three this season.

South Carolina Upstate is 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 road games and 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. Winthrop is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 6-16 ATS n their last 22 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 home games.

I get why the Eagles are favored at home, but I’m leaning towards the Spartans here. Winthrop has been covering in games, but they’ve been squeaking by in games that have low lines. The Eagles aren’t blowing a ton of teams out of the water as of late. South Carolina Upstate isn’t a world-beater, but they’ve performed really well against the number on the road and I just think that this is too many points to give up to the Spartans here.
