Fort Wayne managed a 3-4 run over their first seven games, losing to Minnesota, Western Michigan, FGCU and Wright State in that time. The Mastodons are 2-3 since then with losses to SIU Edwardsville and Cleveland State (twice).
In Wednesday’s matchup versus Cleveland State, the Mastodons were down by three at halftime and ultimately couldn’t catch up in a 65-58 loss. Jarred Godfrey led the team on 18 points, and Bobby Planutis added 11 points.
Over on the Youngstown State side, they went 7-3 over their first 10 games with losses to Penn State, SIU Edwardsville and Niagara. It’s been a 2-2 run since then with victories versus Defiance and Robert Morris.
Matched up against Robert Morris on Tuesday, the Penguins posted a two-point edge in each half for a 64-60 win. Michael Akuchie led the team with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Tevin Olison chipped in with 15 points and six boards in 30 minutes of work.
Youngstown State is 1-4 ATS in their last five at home and 2-6 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up win. The over is 5-2 in the Penguins’ last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Mastodons are 6-2 ATS in their last eight road games and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. Fort Wayne is 2-5 ATS in their last seven Friday games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Youngstown State. The Penguins are coming off a pretty tepid game versus a not-so-good Robert Morris team, but the good news is that Youngstown State still got the win. The Penguins have scored pretty well this year when the matchup is right, and I think they’ll be in line for another 70-plus points outing here. The Mastodons have put up the points well at times this season, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one as a higher-scoring finish.
