Central Michigan started out the year with a couple of losses, falling 58-44 to Oklahoma State and 38-24 to South Alabama. The Chippewas got a win over Bucknell 41-0 in game three, then fell 33-14 to Penn State and 38-17 to Toledo.
In the Ball State matchup, the Chippewas were up 16-14 going into the final quarter but ultimately fell 17-16 in a tough result. QB Daniel Richardson managed 210 yards and a score, while Lew Nichols put up 97 rush yards and a TD on 31 carries.
Over on the Akron side, they got an OT win over St. Francis PA 30-23 in their opener, then fell 52-0 to Michigan State and 63-6 to Tennessee. The Zips continued to struggle against Liberty with a 21-12 loss, and against Bowling Green with a 31-28 defeat.
Matched up against Ohio, Akron gave up 48 points over the first three quarters in a 55-34 defeat. Quarterback DJ Irons posted 418 yards with an interception. Clyde Price led the rush with 39 yards and three touchdowns off 14 carries.
PICK: I’m probably leaning Akron but also probably staying away. This should be a reasonably competitive matchup regardless, though. The Zips didn’t do too badly on offense in their loss to Ohio, notching 478 total yards (418 passing) and 33 first downs. The 3-of-10 rate on third down tries, two turnovers and 561 yards allowed didn’t help matters, though.
As for CMU, they had Ball State down, holding the Cardinals to 0-of-13 on third downs and just 15 first downs. The Chippewas ultimately couldn’t finish it off, though. I like this matchup to be another close one, with Akron eking out a late cover.
