In this article we will formulate an Akron vs Wyoming prediction for this College Football game on Thursday, August 28th at InfoCision Stadium in Akron, Ohio. Let’s take a look at the prediction for this week 1 matchup.

Akron Zips Betting Preview

The Akron Zips went 4-8 (3-5) last season and they finished eighth in the MAC standings. Akron really struggled in their first seven games of the season, but they did win three of their last five. The Zips got wins against Colgate, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, and Toledo, while they lost to Ohio State, Rutgers, South Carolina, Ohio, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Buffalo, and Northern Illinois. Akron scored 20.4 points per game in 2024, which ranked 120th in the country, while they allowed 32.0 points against per game, which was 111th. The Zips had plenty of issues on both sides of the ball last year, but they did finish the season playing very well compared to the start.

This year, Akron finally returns an experienced quarterback in Ben Finley, who has played at Cal and NC State, so that is already a huge positive coming into the season. The offensive line isn’t great, so that is a concern, but Finley should be pretty solid at making changes at the line. I don’t love the running backs or wide receivers for the Zips, but you never know how the additions from the portal will fit in. On defense, Akron lost a good amount of production from last season, so this group may need a game or two to figure things out.

Wyoming Cowboys Betting Preview

The Wyoming Cowboys were 3-9 (2-5) last year and they finished tied for 10th in the Mountain West standings with San Diego State. Wyoming got off to a rough start by losing their first four games of the year and they never were able to win two games in a row. The Cowboys picked up wins against Air Force, New Mexico, and Washington State, while they lost to Arizona State, Idaho, BYU, North Texas, San Diego State, San Jose State, Utah State, Colorado State, and Boise State. Wyoming scored 19.3 points per game, which was ranked 124th in the nation, while they allowed 28.3 points against per game, which was ranked 90th. Wyoming did play better at the end of the season, as they split their last four games, and they nearly picked up a win against Boise State.

This season, Wyoming should have Kaden Anderson under center, who was alright in limited work last year. The Cowboys have plenty of work to do on the offensive line and the running back room isn’t great, but it does sound like the receivers will be decent. On defense, Wyoming is normally one of the better units in the country, but they to improve on last season. Wyoming does have a bunch of new faces on the defense from the portal, but that is concerning and may take a few games to find the proper rotation.

  • Akron ranked 134th among FBS teams for 4th down conversion percentage last season (26.7).
  • Akron ranked T132nd among FBS teams for interceptions last season (3).
  • Wyoming ranked 132nd among FBS teams for red zone percentage against last season (94.7).

Akron vs Wyoming Prediction

Both of these teams come into this matchup looking to improve on last year’s disaster, but both teams have plenty of question marks coming into the season. I do think the quarterbacks for each team will be alright, which should make this an interesting game in week one. I have more faith in the Wyoming defense than I do in the Akron defense, but I think Finley can keep this game close. I just don’t see a seven point difference when looking at these teams, especially with all of the action in the transfer portal. Take Akron and the points at home.
