The Houston Cougars and the Arizona State Sun Devils meet Saturday in college football action from Sun Devil Stadium. Here’s an Arizona State vs Houston prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Arizona State vs Houston pick.
Houston Cougars Betting Preview
The Cougars got off to a nice start this year, rattling off wins over their first four opponents. Those victories came versus Stephen F. Austin, Rice, Colorado and Oregon State in succession. Houston took their first loss—a sizable 35-11 loss at that—on October 4 versus Texas Tech, but then bounced back with a nice showing in a road win over Oklahoma State in the next game. In the victory over the Cowboys, Houston scored points in every quarter, including double-digits in three of four. The Cougars defense held Oklahoma State to just 225 total yards, 10 first downs, 4.4 yards per play and 5-of-14 on third-down tries.
In their matchup with Arizona last weekend, Houston fell behind early 14-7 after the first quarter. The Cougars rallied with 21 unanswered points in the next two quarters though, resulting in a 31-28 victory in the end. QB Conner Weigman finished 15-of-23 for 164 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing 14 times for 98 yards and another score. Dean Connors led the rush with 20 carries for an even 100 yards, while Amare Thomas had four catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Tanner Koziol added six catches for 40 yards and a touchdown of his own in the victory effort.
Arizona State Sun Devils Betting Preview
Over on the Arizona State side, they started off on a pretty nice run themselves, posting wins in four of their first five games. The lone blemish in that time was versus Mississippi State 24-20. Outside of that it was victories versus Northern Arizona, Texas State, Baylor and TCU. Arizona State would take another loss on the road versus a tough Utah team in game six, though. In that 42-10 defeat, the Sun Devils gave up points in every quarter along with 412 total yards, 276 rush yards, 7.5 yards per play, 23 first downs and 4-of-8 on third-down conversion attempts. The offense added just 259 yards and 3.3 yards per play in the defeat.
Matched up against Texas Tech last weekend, the Sun Devils held a modest 9-7 lead going into the second half. Arizona State hit a 17-15 run from there however, powering out an upset win at home 26-22. QB Sam Leavitt was 28-of-47 for 319 yards and a score while leading rusher Raleek Brown carried 19 times for 69 yards and a touchdown of his own. Jordyn Tyson logged 10 receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Jaren Hamilton caught three balls for 101 yards in the winning effort.

Arizona State vs Houston Prediction
I’ll probably stick with Houston. The Cougars are coming off a wild and tense win at home over Arizona last Saturday. The offense notched 396 total yards, with 232 of those coming on the ground, alongside 24 first downs and a nice 8-of-14 on third-down conversions. On defense Houston gave up 381 yards and 6.7 yards per play but didn’t do too badly on third downs themselves with 4-of-9 allowed. It was a nice win, even if things did get a little crazy in the final quarter. Houston has now put up 70 combined points in their last two outings after scoring just 11 at home versus Texas Tech to kick off the month of October.
As for Arizona State, they played an overall consistent game on Saturday, holding the ball for 37:12 and keeping Texas Tech’s offense off the field as much as possible. The Sun Devils will be a great test for Houston this weekend, but cover-wise I think the Cougars can get it.
