Texas State went just 1-3 over their first four games this year with a lone win over FIU in overtime. The Bobcats would go 1-3 over their next four (beating South Alabama in OT) before beating LA-Monroe and falling to Georgia Southern.
In last weekend’s matchup versus Coastal Carolina, Texas State had a 14-14 tie at halftime but couldn’t keep it up for the whole game in a 35-21 loss. QB Tyler Vitt put up 106 yards and a score, and Calvin Hill led the rush with 100 yards and a TD.
Over on the Arkansas State side, they won their opener versus Central Arkansas but then hit an ugly losing streak. The Red Wolves lost to Memphis, Washington, Tulsa, GA Southern, Coastal, Louisiana, South Alabama and App State before a win over LA-Monroe 27-24.
In the Georgia State game, Arkansas State had a 14-13 deficit going into the fourth quarter and couldn’t break through in a 28-20 loss. QB Layne Hatcher finished on 273 yards with one TD and two picks, while Lincoln Pare had 33 yards on 13 carries.
The Bobcats are 7-2 ATS in their last nine in November and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 on turf. Texas State is 3-7 ATS versus a team with a losing record.
Meanwhile, the Red Wolves are 26-12 ATS in their last 38 in November and 2-5 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win. The under is 6-0 in their last six overall.
PICK: I’m going to try Arkansas State. They’re going to need to find a running game, though. The Red Wolves had a pathetic minus-3 yards on the ground against Georgia State and posted just 16 first downs with two turnovers. Still, they were in it until the end and stayed relatively competitive.
As for Texas State, they couldn’t get much going against Coastal Carolina, and at just 24:54 in time of possession the defense had trouble getting off the field (8-of-13 third-down conversions allowed). The Red Wolves should be able to take advantage if they can get the run game together.
