The Eagles had a fairly mediocre season in 2025 but did get to a bowl game at least. Southern Miss finished 7-6 overall with a 5-3 run in the Sun Belt. That result would put the team in second place among the West Division, one slot behind Troy. The Golden Eagles made the New Orleans Bowl versus Western Kentucky but lost that one 27-16.
In their 2026 season debut versus Alcorn State, the Eagles posted points in every quarter along the way to a 49-3 blowout win at home. QB Ethan Hampton was 13-for-23 for 180 yards, one TD and one pick. Steven Robinson (23 carries; 123 yards; three TDs) and Jamaica Wilder (14 carries; 90 yards; two TDs) paced the offense on the ground.
Auburn Tigers Betting Preview
Over on the Auburn side, they had a tough time in a stacked Southeastern Conference last year. The Tigers went just 5-7 overall with a 1-7 run in the SEC games. That would put the team ahead of only Mississippi State, South Carolina and Arkansas in the standings. Auburn finished the year on a 1-3 run with losses to Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Alabama.
Matched up against Baylor last weekend the Tigers held a slim 10-7 lead going into the final frame. When the dust settled, Auburn ended up with a tense 17-16 victory. QB Byrum Brown was 26-of-35 for 259 yards and three picks. Jeremiah Cobb added 12 carries for 53 yards and a TD while Keshaun Singleton had 89 yards on seven grabs.

Auburn vs Southern Miss Prediction
I’ll take a stab on Southern Miss but I’m probably not touching it. The Eagles looked great against an overmatched opponent in their opener, notching 543 yards (317 rushing), 6.5 yards per play and 32 first downs. Southern Miss’ defense gave up 223 yards, 3.8 yards per play and 11 first downs alongside five takeaways. The only real gripe was the Eagles spotty 5-of-12 result on third downs.
As for Auburn, they were able to put away a pesky Baylor team despite three interceptions and 333 passing yards allowed. The Tigers notched 389 yards total themselves with 24 first downs and 10-of-18 on third-down tries. Auburn’s defense did well on thirds with 7-of-22 allowed. This weekend’s matchup will be significantly easier but I think the Eagles can still cover if all goes well.
