The UAB Blazers and Miami-OH RedHawks do battle Friday in the college football Bahamas Bowl from Thomas Robinson Stadium. Miami-OH managed to go 6-6 overall this year. The RedHawks beat Ball State in their last outing. As for UAB, they’re 6-6 as well following a win over Louisiana Tech. Miami-OH went 3-3 over their first six games this year. The RedHawks managed wins over Robert Morris, Northwestern and Kent State in that time. The final six games of the year were another 3-3 run with wins versus Akron, Northern Illinois and Ball State.

In the Ball State matchup back on November 22, Miami-OH faced a 14-3 deficit by halftime. The RedHawks hit a 15-3 run in the second half and eked out the 18-17 comeback win. Quarterback Aveon Smith posted 217 yards with a TD and a pick in the victory.

Over on the UAB side, they went 4-2 over their first six games. The wins were over Alabama A&M, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee and Charlotte. The Blazers hit a 2-4 stretch in their final half-dozen outings, beating only North Texas and Louisiana Tech.

On November 26 against Louisiana Tech, UAB scored all of their points between the second and third quarters, rolling to an eventual 37-27 win. DeWayne McBride (272 yards; TD) and Jermaine Brown (119 yards; two TDs) did most of the offensive work through the rush.

The RedHawks are 4-0 ATS in their last four bowl games and 4-0 ATS in the last four in December. Miami-OH is 7-0 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games.
Meanwhile, the Blazers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven in December and 2-6 ATS in their last eight Friday games. UAB is 1-6 ATS in their last seven overall.

PICK: I’m going to try Miami-OH in this one. We should have a pretty good matchup here; I think it could be closer than a lot of people think. The RedHawks took a while to get going in their last game versus Ball State but they eventually pulled off the win to get to a half-dozen. It wasn’t the prettiest victory in the world however, and Miami-OH has been quite erratic all season.

As for UAB, they didn’t have too much trouble with a struggling LA Tech team in their last outing. The Blazers have been scoring well lately with 37 or more points in three of their last four. If Miami-OH can slow down the tempo and control the clock I think they’ll stay in range for a cover. Should be a pretty good matchup overall if both teams play to their capabilities.
