Northwestern opened up the 2022 season with a close win over Nebraska 31-28. That’s the last time the Wildcats have tasted victory, however. Northwestern has since rattled off a series of losses to Duke, Southern Illinois, Miami-OH, Penn State and Wisconsin.
In the Wisconsin game, the Wildcats were down 28-0 going into the final quarter. Northwestern managed to put up a cosmetic touchdown in a 42-27 defeat. QB Brandan Sullivan notched 114 yards and the score, while also leading the rushers with 10 carries for 33 yards.
Over on the Maryland side, their year began with three straight wins over Buffalo 31-10, Charlotte 56-21 and SMU 34-27. The Terrapins would then lose to Michigan 34-27, beat Michigan State 27-13 and fall to Purdue 31-29 in their next trio.
Back on Saturday versus Indiana, Maryland scored 24 points in the second half during a 38-33 victory. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa finished with 270 yards and two scores. Roman Hemby led the Maryland rush with 107 yards and a TD off 17 carries.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Maryland. The Terrapins did a pretty good job against a tricky Indiana team over the weekend, posting 442 total yards and 25 first downs. Maryland was solid on defense (despite giving up 315 pass yards), coming up with three turnovers and holding the Hoosiers to just 4-of-13 on third-down tries.
As for Northwestern, they’re still searching for any measure of success amid a tough season so far. The Wildcats have scored just 28 combined points across their last three games; the good news is that the defense has allowed 17 or fewer points in two of the last three. Northwestern still looks overmatched in this one, though.
