The Ohio State Buckeyes and Iowa Hawkeyes meet Saturday in week 8 Big Ten college football action from Ohio Stadium. Iowa is coming off an open week. The Hawkeyes last played in a close loss to Illinois. As for Ohio State, they haven’t played since October 8 either. The Buckeyes beat Michigan State in their last appearance. Iowa managed a 7-3 win over South Dakota State in their opener, then lost a tough one to Iowa State 10-7. The Hawkeyes would bounce back with wins 27-0 over Nevada and 27-10 over Rutgers, but then the team fell 27-14 against a tough Michigan squad.
Iowa faced another tricky team in their last game. The Hawkeyes couldn’t score in the second half against Illinois and ended up with a 9-6 defeat. QB Spencer Petras finished with 170 yards and a pick, while Leshon Williams added 32 yards off seven carries.
Over on the Ohio State side, they managed a 21-10 win over Notre Dame in their opener. That’s been the closest outing so far for the Buckeyes: they would go on to take out Arkansas State 45-12, Toledo 77-21, Wisconsin 52-21 and Rutgers 49-10 in the next quartet.
Matched up against Michigan State on October 8, the Buckeyes kept their win streak going. Ohio State scored 21 points in the second quarter alone on the way to a 49-20 victory. QB CJ Stroud finished with 361 yards and six touchdowns. TreVeyon Henderson led the rush with 118 yards and a score off 19 carries.
The Hawkeyes are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four road games and 1-4 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. The under is 5-0 in Iowa’s last five after a straight-up loss.
Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are 4-1-1 ATS in the last six conference games and 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win. Ohio State is 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 in October.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Ohio State, but the line’s too thick to mess with. The Buckeyes haven’t really been tested yet this year, and they’re coming off another dominant effort. Ohio State notched 614 total yards in the win over Michigan State, along with 29 first downs, 8.3 yards per play and 37:14 in time of possession. There aren’t too many Big Ten teams who can compete with them right now.
As for Iowa, they’ve had some hits and misses on the young season but the Hawkeyes seem to struggle on offense no matter who they’re playing. The Hawkeyes have scored 14 points or fewer in four of six games so far, and I think they’ll make it seven in this matchup.
