Purdue went just 1-2 over the first three games this year, beating Indiana State 56-0 in between losses to Penn State 35-31 and Syracuse 32-29. The Boilermakers hit a win streak afterward, taking out Florida Atlantic, Minnesota and Maryland.
In the Nebraska matchup, the Boilermakers took a 27-13 lead into halftime. Purdue had to hang on tight but eventually won 43-37. QB Aidan O’Connell finished with 391 yards and four scores, while Devin Mockobee led the rush with 178 yards and a TD.
Over on the Wisconsin side, they hit a 3-3 run over their first six games of 2022. The wins came courtesy of Illinois State 38-0, New Mexico State 66-7 and Northwestern 42-7. The Badgers lost to Washington State 17-14, Ohio State 52-21 and Illinois 34-10.
Matched up against Michigan State last weekend, the Badgers went punch-for-punch with the Spartans but eventually fell 34-28 in double overtime. QB Graham Mertz managed 131 yards with two scores and an INT. Braelon Allen rushed 29 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Purdue, but this should be a pretty fun matchup regardless. The Boilermakers were rolling on offense versus Nebraska with 608 total yards, 38 first downs and a whopping 101 total plays. Purdue gave up 476 yards on the other side and had to hang on to get the victory, but it was a nice effort to keep the win streak going.
As for Wisconsin, they were out-gained 389-283 and had a couple of turnovers but still posted a pretty good overall effort in the tough overtime loss to Michigan State. The Badgers should bounce back and give Purdue plenty of trouble, but I think the Boilermakers will eventually eke out the cover.
