The Boston College Eagles meet the Colgate Raiders and Saturday in week 1 college football action at Alumni Stadium. Colgate finished 0-2 last season and haven’t won a game since November of 2019. Boston College have won no less than six games the last five years and enter the second season under coach Jeff Hafley.
The Colgate Raiders averaged nine points and 304.5 yards per game last season. Colgate allowed an average of 32 points and 346.5 yards per game last season. Grant Breneman returns at quarterback after throwing for 419 yards and five interceptions. Breneman also led Colgate with 90 rushing yards and a touchdown. A wide receiver tandem of Garrett Oakey and Myles Bradley return after combining for 199 receiving yards on 14 catches. Defensively, Milton Braasch returns after leading Colgate with 13 tackles, Jared Petrichick had one sack and William Gruber had one interception. Colgate returns all of its key players from last seasons small season and that should produce a better effort. However, Colgate has to be better at the quarterback position if this is going to be a winning season for the Raiders.
The Boston College Eagles averaged 27.8 points and 385.9 yards per game last season. Boston College allowed an average of 28.4 points and 416.8 yards per game last season. Phil Jurkovec returns at quarterback after throwing for 2,500 yards and 17 touchdowns. Travis Levy should get more carries at running back after averaging 3.2 yards per carry in the backup role. Zay Flowers and CJ Lewis is a returning wide receiver duo that combined for more than 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns. Defensively, Boston College lost its top-two tackles, but Josh DeBerry had 44 tackles, Shitta Sillah had 2.5 sacks and Jahmin Muse had three interceptions. Boston College should be really good offensively, but there are questions on defense with a lot of top production no longer around. Boston College has holes at linebacker and it will be interesting to see if they can get field before the schedule picks up.
The Colgate Raiders are not a good football team to put it kindly and they shouldn’t have much success in this game. Boston College is loaded offensively and usually figures things out defensively as the season plays out. This should be a comfortable win for Boston College at home. However, 50 points is a monster line, especially for a season opener where we often see sluggish or sloppy play as players get back in the swing of things. I’m not leaving this many points on the table. It’s Colgate and the points or pass for me.
