The California Golden Bears meet the Oregon State Beavers Saturday in week 9 Pac-12 college football action from California Memorial Stadium. Oregon State is fresh off a matchup versus Utah. In that one the Beavers bagged an eight-point victory. As for Cal, they played Colorado this past weekend. The Bears ended up cruising to a 23-point win there. Oregon State lost to Purdue in their opener this year, but then hit a win streak versus Hawaii 45-27, Idaho 42-0, USC 45-27 and Washington 27-24. The Beavers had trouble with Washington State in game six however, losing 31-24.
Last weekend versus Utah, Oregon State scored 21 points in the third quarter on the way to a nice 42-34 win. QB Chance Nolan put up 208 yards with two scores, and BJ Baylor rushed 19 times for 152 yards and a TD of his own.
As for California, they went just 1-5 over their first six games. The Golden Bears beat Sacramento State 42-30, but otherwise lost to Nevada 22-17, TCU 34-32, Washington 31-24 (OT), Washington State 21-6 and Oregon 24-17.
In the Colorado game last weekend, the Bears jumped out to a 23-3 lead at the break and held on for a 26-3 win. Chase Garbers finished with 225 yards and two scores on 22-of-29 passing while also leading the rush with 96 yards from 10 carries.
The Beavers are 5-1 ATS in their last six overall and 10-2 ATS in their last 12 road games. Oregon State is also 6-1 ATS in their last seven after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Bears are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six conference games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 versus a team with a winning record. Cal is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m going to try Oregon State here. You could probably make a good case either way, however; this should be a great matchup. In any case, the Beavers posted 468 yards of offense in their last outing versus a good Utah team. Oregon State added 260 rush yards, 7.8 yards per play and 22 first downs, but did commit 11 penalties for 114 yards in a sloppy effort.
As for the Bears, they were completely dominant against Colorado, holding the Buffs to 104 total yards and seven first downs. I don’t think Cal will have quite the defensive hold here, but this game should be close the whole way.
