The UMass Minutemen and the Central Michigan Chippewas meet Saturday in college football action from Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Here’s a Central Michigan vs UMass prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Central Michigan vs UMass pick.

UMass Minutemen Betting Preview

It’s been a rough year for the Minutemen so far. UMass opened up with a string of losses, first coming versus Temple then Bryant (the latter by just one point). The Minutemen would then get blown out by Iowa and Missouri in the next pair before a 21-3 loss to Western Michigan. In game six versus Kent State, UMass tallied up another blowout defeat 42-6. In that one the Minutemen gave up 21 points in the third quarter alone, but did hold the Flashes’ offense to just 3-of-12 on third-down tries. The UMass offense couldn’t help much with 271 total yards (44 rushing), 3.3 yards per play and 6-of-20 on third downs themselves in the defeat.

In last weekend’s matchup with Buffalo, the Minutemen were up 14-10 by halftime. UMass was outscored 18-7 the rest of the way however, leading to a 28-21 defeat in the end. QB AJ Hairston finished 6-of-15 for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Brandon Hood led the rush on 25 carries for 180 yards and a touchdown. Max Dowling’s 77-yard touchdown catch put him atop the receivers, and Kezion Dia-Johnson had a 27-yard TD catch of his own in the defeat as well.

Central Michigan Chippewas Betting Preview

Over on the Chippewas’ side, they managed to carve out a .500 record across their first half dozen appearances this year. Central Michigan started out with a win over San Jose State in the opener then fell to Pitt and Michigan in the next pair. Games four and five were both wins though, as the Chippewas dispatched Wagner and Eastern Michigan in that time. In their matchup against Akron however, Central Michigan gave up 14 points in two different quarters on the way to a 28-22 road loss. The Chippewas committed nine penalties along the way, while the offense mustered just 4-of-12 on third-down conversions in the defeat.

Matched up against Bowling Green last weekend, Central Michigan fell into an early deficit but quickly erased it with 17 points in the second quarter. The Chippewas added 10 unanswered points in the second half and held on for the win 27-6 in the end. QB Joey Labas had just 72 yards on 2-for-4 passing as Angel Flores did most of the offensive work with 18 carries for 72 yards and three touchdowns. Collin Payne’s lone 63-yard catch put him atop the (three total) receivers in the winning effort for the Chippewas.

Central Michigan vs UMass Prediction

I’ll probably stay with UMass, but realistically I’m not touching this one. The Minutemen were able to hang with Buffalo for a while last weekend but couldn’t do much in the second half. UMass committed 10 of the game’s 21 overall penalties and went just 5-of-17 on third downs. the defense also coughed up a whopping 403 passing yards. The Minutemen do have some good news in this one though: they’d been below eight points in four straight games (all losses) prior to that 21-point effort against the Bulls.

As for Central Michigan, they’re coming off a rather odd victory over Bowling Green. The Chippewas defense came away with a couple of picks and held the Falcons to just 5-of-15 on third downs in a sloppy game (25 total penalties). Central Michigan rushed for 203 yards but went just 5-of-12 on third-down tries themselves. The good news for the Chippewas is that they’re pretty consistent scoring-wise these days. They’ve hit 22 or more points in three straight outings.
