South Carolina State managed to work in an abbreviated four-game season this past spring. The Bulldogs would finish 3-1 in those matchups. South Carolina State started out rough with a 31-7 loss to Alabama A&M, but found their form by winning the next three games.
In this season’s opener game versus Alabama A&M, South Carolina State fought valiantly but ultimately dropped the game 42-41. Corey Fields tossed for 213 yards, two picks and a TD while also leading the rush on 89 yards and a score. Shaquan Davis chipped in with 140 receiving yards and a TD.
Over on the Clemson side, they worked in 12 games last fall, powering their way to a 10-2 overall record and an 8-1 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Tigers beat Notre Dame 34-10 in the ACC Championship game, but lost to Ohio State 49-28 in the CFP Semifinal.
In week one against Georgia, Clemson couldn’t find much offense in a 10-3 defeat. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei had 178 yards and an interception, and Joseph Ngata led the receivers with six grabs for 110 yards.
PICK: I’m going to stick with SC State. The Bulldogs have some work to do on defense though; they gave up 426 passing yards (and four pass TDs), allowing Alabama A&M to score in every quarter. South Carolina State did some good things on the ground themselves, but really had a hard time keeping up.
As for Clemson, they had just two rushing yards in their opener loss, posting 180 total with 3.0 yards per play. A lot of that was due to a great defensive effort by Georgia, but it’s concerning nonetheless. I think the Tigers will take a step forward here but I like the Bulldogs on a cover.
