Western Kentucky got off to a 3-1 start this year with wins over Austin Peay, Hawaii and FIU. The Hilltoppers went 2-2 in their next four (beating Middle Tennessee and UAB) before a loss to North Texas, a win over Charlotte and a win over Rice.
Back on Saturday versus Auburn, the Hilltoppers had things all tied up at 17-17 going into the third quarter. Western Kentucky was outscored 24-0 from there in a 41-17 defeat. QB Austin Reed had 289 yards with two picks and two TDs.
Over on the Florida Atlantic side, they were 2-1 after three games with only a loss to Ohio. The Owls lost to UCF, Purdue and North Texas over the next three. FAU would then go 3-3 over the next six with wins over Rice, UAB and FIU.
Florida Atlantic took on Middle Tennessee last Saturday. In that one the Owls were down 28-14 by halftime. FAU gave up 14 points in each of the first three quarters in a 49-21 loss. QB N’Kosi Perry finished on 325 yards and a touchdown. Larry McCammon added 35 rush yards and a TD.
WKU is 6-0 ATS in the last six after an ATS loss and 7-1 ATS in their last eight in November. The Hilltoppers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games.
Meanwhile, the Owls are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 overall and 3-9 ATS in the last 12 conference games. FAU is 1-4 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Western Kentucky but not going near this one. The Hilltoppers had a rough second half against Auburn and ended up with 385 total yards (85 rushing) in the defeat. WKU posted 24 first downs and went 9-of-21 on third-down tries.
As for FAU, they coughed up 615 total yards and 30 first downs in the Middle Tennessee game. It wasn’t a terrible offensive performance otherwise but the Owls were certainly unable to keep up. I don’t think they’ll cover here either.
