The Florida State Seminoles meet the Jacksonville State Gamecocks Saturday in college football action from Doak Campbell Stadium. Jacksonville played UAB in their first game, suffering a blowout loss. As for the Seminoles, they took on Notre Dame this past Sunday. In that one Florida State fell by three points in overtime. Jacksonville State had a solid year last season, going 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Gamecocks finished in first place in the conference rankings with that result. Jacksonville State’s season ended with an FCS Playoffs Quarterfinals loss 20-14 to Delaware, however.
In their first game of the year, Jacksonville State didn’t do so well in a 31-0 shutout loss to UAB. In that one, Gamecocks QB Zerrick Cooper put up 91 yards on 18-of-35 passing and also led the rush with 28 yards on six carries. PJ Wells added 42 yards on three receptions as well.
Over on the Florida State side, they had a rough go of things last year with a 3-6 overall record and a 2-6 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference games. The Seminoles finished two spots out of the basement in the rankings, just ahead of Duke and Syracuse.
In Florida State’s first game versus Notre Dame, the Seminoles posted an 18-point fourth-quarter rally to tie things up heading into overtime, but ultimately lost 41-38. QB Jordan Travis came up with 130 yards, two TDs and three picks, while Jashaun Corbin had 144 rush yards and a score.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Florida State. The Seminoles were great on the ground (264 yards) but not so much through the air (178 yards; three picks) in their opener game. Still, FSU did some promising things against a perennially-good Notre Dame squad. If they can clean up the mistakes Florida State should take a few steps forward in the coming weeks.
As for Jacksonville State, there’s not much to like about their first game; the team gathered just 155 total yards and racked up 10 penalties. It’s going to be hard for the Gamecocks to get anything going here.
