New Mexico started out this season with two wins over Houston Baptist and New Mexico State, but then lost five straight to Texas A&M, UTEP, Air Force, San Diego State and Colorado State. The Lobos were able to finally get another W versus Wyoming on October 23.
Last weekend versus UNLV, the Lobos were within four points at the break but didn’t score from there during an eventual 31-17 defeat. QB CJ Montez had just 28 yards passing, and Aaron Dumas led the rush with 92 yards from 15 carries.
Over on the Fresno State side, they had a 4-2 run over their first six games, losing to Oregon and Hawaii while otherwise taking out UConn, Cal Poly, UCLA and UNLV. The Bulldogs managed three wins over Wyoming, Nevada and San Diego State after that.
In the matchup agains Boise State, Fresno State was in trouble 16-7 at halftime and could only score once from there in a 40-14 blowout loss. QB Jake Haener finished on 279 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Keric Wheatfall added 81 yards and a TD on six catches.
New Mexico is 9-23 ATS in their last 32 conference games and 4-13 ATS in their last 17 in November. The Lobos are also 1-4 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss and 0-4 ATS in their last four on turf. Fresno is also 2-6 ATS in their last eight conference games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Fresno State, but that line’s a little thick to mess with. Both these teams are coming off flat games however, and both need a good showing here. In any case, the Bulldogs gave up 470 yards of offense with 6.0 yards per play and 24 first downs to Boise State in their last game. Fresno committed 11 penalties, three turnovers and posted a 4-of-15 rate on third- and fourth-down tries. It was an ugly outing.
As for the Lobos, it’s kind of amazing that they were able to stay within two touchdowns at game’s end versus UNLV, considering New Mexico had just 36 pass yards, 13 first downs and three lost fumbles. I expect a bounce-back here, but not enough to cover.
